During the “Arab Spring” of 2011, the internet was a space for mobilisation. Despite the increasing sophistication of persecution, the efforts to defend human rights, both online and offline, have not ceased.
This research aims to highlight the links between the efforts of digital security trainings in the Arab region with the human rights realities, focusing on Morocco and Palestine. It is part of APC’s project Building a culture of online human rights and digital security in the Maghreb-Machrek region.
This report explores how local groups in the Maghreb and Machrek regions are engaged in internet-related rights advocacy at the national and regional levels, and how that reflects upon the inclusion of these issues in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) process.
This paper, produced as part of the APC project Advocacy for Change through Technology in India, Malaysia and Pakistan (APC-IMPACT), draws upon the work previously done by APC in providing guidance to the interpretation of the rights to freedom of association and assembly in the digital age.
Since we launched the Advocacy for Change through Technology (APC IMPACT) project, APC has been working with members and partners in India, Malaysia and Pakistan to protect and promote human rights on the internet. As part of the project, our partners have developed a baseline of research that has already produced three papers.
As part of our mission to empower people’s use of ICTs for social justice, APC is working with partners and members to ensure HRDs in the Maghreb-Machrek region have the tools and knowledge to operate securely online. Global Information Society Watch (GISWatch) is an annual report co-produced by the APC network and partners, which looks at the progress being made in creating an inclusive information society worldwide (particularly in implementing WSIS goals), encourages critical debate, and strengthens networking and advocacy for a just, inclusive information society.
