Let’s promote a feminist internet during International Women’s Day and the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women

There’s a crucial need to build a feminist internet that is inclusive and safe and recognises the vital role that women and gender-diverse people play in the digital world. This week, two key global events offer an opportunity to bring attention to the need for gender equality in the field of digital technologies.

The 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (#CSW67) starting on 6 March, is the first in the Commission’s history to have a specific focus on gender equality and digital technologies. It is taking place in New York, but many sessions can be followed online. APC will be bringing forward key issues around online gender-based violence, freedom of expression, gendered disinformation and more. We particularly recommend our side events “Ending online gender-based violence: How feminist approaches can create inclusive online spaces for all women and girls” and "Catalysing collective action to end technology-facilitated gender-based violence" (see all sessions here).

The session will coincide with International Women’s Day (#IWD2023), which this year revolves around the motto "Embrace equity".

Centring the full realisation of human rights, participation, security and well-being

Beyond focusing the conversation on technology and gender around "empowerment" and "innovation", we extend an invitation to centre the full realisation of human rights, participation, security and well-being, through producing, sharing and highlighting feminist perspectives and analysis around the priority theme.

This includes the importance of inclusion and meaningful participation of all women and girls, in all their diversity, in the digital space and in decision making at all levels of use, design, management and governance of digital technologies.
