This July, nearly 100 people gathered to share a two-day space in Cape Town, in a quest to discuss and strategise around decolonisation, knowledge and the internet. We are pleased to release the “Decolonizing the Internet 2018 Summary Report”, to share more about what happened at this event.
The internet is viewed as the gateway to development. So, how do we respond to the challenge of the persistent digital divide? Mariana Fossatti says that we have to do this by decolonising our thinking around global governance of the internet, prioritising factors of justice and equity.
The aim of the event was to bring together feminist and women's movement leaders who use the internet as a political and communications tool in their activism, in order for them to share their experiences, discuss the development of safe spaces and digital self-defence, and carry out a critical assessment of digital technologies and spaces.
The actions captured in this report reflect the energy, diversity and growth of the APC network. New members AlterMundi, from Argentina, Point of View, from India, Rhizomatica, from Mexico, Social Media Exchange (SMEX), from Lebanon, and Zenzeleni Networks, from South Africa, have added to the richness of the APC community and the breadth of our reach.
