During General Debate on the promotion and protection of all human rights, Pakistan, speaking on behalf of 10 other countries, expressed concerns regarding use and abuse of advanced surveillance technologies in serious violation of the right to privacy and international law. Bytes for All, Pakistan and APC commend those countries for their statement. At the same time, we are concerned about proposals to develop a new intergovernmental mechanism of internet governance.
Responding to claims made by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), that Facebook is assisting the government to filter and block “undesirable” content, Bytes for All, Pakistan has written an open letter to the Global Network Initiative (GNI), of which Facebook is a member, seeking support to investigate these claims.
The Take Back the Tech! local campaign developed by APC member Bytes for All, Pakistan won the “innovative campaign award” from the Avon Foundation. B4A says they will continue to work on strengthening women’s use of technology to raise awareness and combat violence against women in Pakistan.

Bytes for All, Pakistan is mourning the devastating loss of Irfan Ali Khudi, a renowned and brave human rights defender from Quetta, Balochistan. Irfan Ali lost his life in a blast last evening during a series of suicide attacks at Rehmat Chowk, Alamdar Road, Quetta.
This campaign launched by APC member Bytes for All from Pakistan is a call for larger human rights movement in the country and citizens to fight the ongoing censorship as it will further take its toll on already compromised civil liberties in the country. All individuals are invited to join the movement and protest by sharing the campaign visuals over the internet.

Bytes for All, Pakistan, strongly condemns hate speech on the Internet, however banning channels of communication, limiting access to information platforms, and steps to curtail free expression only serve to pave the way for politics-based control systems that curb the voices of individuals.
