Freedom Fone wins Index on Censorship Innovation Award

Technology doesn’t change the world, how we use it does

Last night, at an award ceremony in London organised and hosted by Index on Censorship , Kubatana won the award for Innovation in media technology for our Freedom Fone project.

Our information officer Upenyu Makoni-Muchemwa was there to receive the award.

Freedom Fone is a media technology that allows people to listen to
pre-recorded audio information on their phones.

/Here’s how we’ve used Freedom Fone in Zimbabwe:/

* Inzwa, an audio magazine that featured news headlines, interviews
with community activists and organisers, jobs vacancies and
upcoming Zimbabwean musicians

* A Harare Festival of the Arts (HIFA) cultural phone in service
during the festival

* A question and answer audio information programme on the
constitutional in collaboration with the Minister of
Constitutional Affairs, Advocate Eric T Matinenga

* Short audio dramas: Tariro on Top about sexual harassment in the
workplace; Big Dhara Going Down about how young women can reject
the advances of sugar daddies; and David Beckham in DZ, an audio
programme on young people and safer sex

*Interested? *You can listen to all our programmes on our web site

Freedom Fone is also being used in Tanzania, Cambodia, Ghana, Niger, Kenya and Sri Lanka.

Other winners of the Index Awards included Syrian cartoonist Ali Ferzat (Arts Award), Bahrain Center for Human Rights (Advocacy Award), Idrak Abbasov (Journalism Award) and Memorial, a living tribute to the survivors of Soviet Russia (Index 40th Anniversary Award).

In the speech that Upenyu gave in London last night she thanked everyone who has supported Kubatana over the years, especially the people who make up the Kubatana
community.

You add, we multiply!
