La presente edición de GenderIT es importante. Llega en un momento en que más de una década de trabajo continuo de feministas y activistas por los derechos de las mujeres en torno a la violencia de género está recibiendo un reconocimiento mucho más formal en el desarrollo de políticas; en que las conversaciones sobre VdG en línea pasaron de ser una discusión periférica en las comunidades de derechos de las mujeres y de derechos en internet a ocupar un espacio central en las conversaciones sobre una internet libre y abierta.

Mi primer Foro de Gobernanza de Internet (FGI) fue en 2009 en Sharm el Sheik. Sentada en un taller sobre “Regulación de contenido, vigilancia y derechos sexuales – privacidad, agencia y seguridad” (la exuberancia verbal del título ya nos dice algo) me preguntaba dónde estaba mi gente. Aparte de mis colegas y aliadas de la Asociación para el Progreso de las Comunicaciones (APC) y su comunidad, no conocía a nadie.

Technology is not gender neutral and this article shows how social media companies and tech corporations play a role in perpetuating online gender-based violence. What we need is a critical examination of the tools available and their underlying techno-politics so we can create community alternatives for feminist communication.
