The open internet, freedom of expression and online civic movements are the foci of the Global Voices Citizen Media Summit that will take place in Cebu, Philippines, on 24-25 January 2015. APC is participating in the summit with two panels:

Sex Positive: Beyond Bodies and Harassment

This panel will explore how the internet has been used to discuss taboo topics, reflect on sexuality and gender, and circumvent traditional censorship and mainstream narratives. It will be moderated by Jan Moolman from APC’s Women’s Rights Programme, and will include Dhyta Caturani from EngageMedia, Bishakha Datta from Mumbai-based, non-profit organization Point of View, Naomi Fontanos from Gender and Development Advocates (GANDA), and Ana Santos from Sex and Sensibilities.

Internet Rights in your Backyard: Joining International Principles and National Advocacy

This roundtable will gather participants from APC, Article19, WebFoundation, Instituto da Tecnologia e Sociedade do Rio (ITS-Rio), Jordan Open Source Association (JOSA), IT for Change and APC member organisations, Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA), OneWorld Platform for South East Europe (owpsee), Collaboration on International ICT Policy in East and Southern Africa (CIPESA) and Jinbonet. Recent work on the advance of a free and open internet at a local level will be presented and challenges ahead will be discussed.

In addition to these panels, APC will host an internal meeting with its Local Actions to Secure Internet Rights (LASIR) project members. Based on the local reality and the global context, participants will discuss the limits and barriers to defend human rights on the internet.
