Uganda orders blocking of Facebook, Twitter

Amid mounting protests over fuel and food prices, the Ugandan government called on ISPs to block access to Facebook and Twitter. The blocking order, a copy of which is available at globalvoicesonline, details that ISPs are “required to block the use of Facebook and Tweeter [sic] for 24 hours as of now, that is: 14th April 2011 at 3.30 p.m. to eliminate the connection and sharing of information that incites the public.”

This latest attempt to crack down on protests follows the arrest of prominent opposition leaders earlier this week.

Freedom of association on the internet is an integral right as outlined in APC’s Internet Rights Charter and a central focus of APC’s new Internet Rights are Human Rights campaign.
