CommunicationisYourRight.org is a new initiative to educate the public and rally support of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This critical United Nations declaration insists that "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."

The CommunicationisYourRight.org petition explains that the consolidation of media companies is damaging universal communication, as it undermines many of the rights espoused in the United Nations Declaration. Ending poverty and hunger, establishing universal education, environmental sustainability and gender equality, combating AIDS and HIV, and promoting children’s health and global partnership all are United Nations Millennium Development Goals to be reached by 2015. This can not be achieved until people in communities worldwide, regardless of race, creed or economic position, can voice their specific needs.

People will not be educated on fundamental issues while the corporate media’s prerogative is maximizing profit by shilling for corporate advertisers and skewing essential information. This petition stands to persuade the United Nations to renew its commitment to the free flow of information.

There are other dedicated groups doing ambitious work to teach the public about Article 19. We’re adding an artistic touch and new media approach to this collective initiative. In addition to signing the petition, we encourage signatories to also send in videos, podcasts, and blogs on Article 19. We want to provide a space where those who won’t be heard by the mainstream media can create their own message. Digital art, paintings, performance art, photography and any other artistic expression are ways to empower oneself, one's community, one’s world, and stand up for the human right to communicate.
