Biography

Misiyah Misiyah was one of the founders of Institut KAPAL Perempuan (Women’s Alternative Education Circle) in 2000 after five years of being active in Solidaritas Perempuan. She is currently the director of the Institut KAPAL Perempuan, a social organisation that places special emphasis on marginalised groups, especially women and minorities in various remote areas in Indonesia.

With a background of more than 23 years of intensive work to empower women in various areas of Indonesia, especially in remote ones, she conducts critical education to develop women’s commitment to making changes to promote and create social justice, gender equality, and respect for diversity. She holds a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Indonesia and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Jember.

Her experience and expertise include the development of women’s knowledge and serving as a facilitator for critical education, as well as developing more than 100 integrated education modules on women’s economic strengthening, education, health, violence elimination, decision making, social protection, and poverty alleviation.
