Biography

Katerina Fialova co-manages the APC Women's Rights Programme (WRP) with Namita Aavriti. With Namita Aavriti and Tigist Shewarega Hussen, she also provides strategic direction on knowledge building activities at the APC WRP. Katerina is a feminist activist and has been involved in advocacy, training and research in creative and strategic use of the internet for movement building and catalysing social change since 1999. Her areas of focus include internet rights, women’s rights, online gender-based violence and engaging digital technology towards feminist movement building.

She previously worked on the Feminist Internet Research Network (FIRN) project, which brings together feminist researchers in the digital technology field, primarily researchers based in the global South, to undertake research and drive changes in one of four thematic areas: access, online gender-based violence, datafication, and economy and labour.

Between 2012 and 2015, Katerina coordinated the multi-country research project "From impunity to justice: Exploring corporate and legal remedies for technology-related violence against women" with partners in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Mexico, Pakistan and the Philippines. She also worked on framing the EROTICS research that linked issues of internet governance, censorship, privacy, women’s rights and sexuality.

From 2006 until 2016, Katerina helped to co-create and coordinate GenderIT.org, a bilingual site on internet, digital technology and gender operated by APC. Between 1998 and 2002, she worked as the networking and communications manager at Econnect, the first non-profit computer network and electronic communication provider for civil society groups in the Czech Republic.

 

Purpose of position

Provide vision and strategic leadership for and overall management of APC's Women’s Rights Programme. Develop programme activities and projects to ensure that the programme remains financially sustainable, strategically relevant and that it effectively contributes to the achievement of APC's strategic priorities.
