APC releases a statement that welcomes the recent resolution for building on efforts the UNGA began last year to effectively frame the challenges to the right to privacy in the digital age. It strongly supports the establishment of a new special rapporteur but condemns the softening of language due to pressure from Five Eyes countries.

UPDATE: The new resolution “Right to Privacy in the Digital Age” (A/RES/69/166) was adopted by the UN General Assembly plenary on 18 December, 2014.

APC and Privacy International along with a global coalition of organisations dedicated to promoting and defending the rights to privacy and freedom of expression contacted state missions to the UN to support a resolution, including a new Special Rapporteur, on the right to privacy in the digital age.
