We see from the headlines that the security of digital networks and information is becoming increasingly important. To shed light on the practical steps that members of civil society can take to protect themselves and their activism, APC and Tactical Tech are hosting a peer-learning session called a “Disco-tech” on the night before the global IGF in Bali, 21 October 2013.
APC has released a new issue paper, “A cyber security agenda for civil society: what is at stake?” For the release of this issue paper, author Alex Comninos spoke with APC’s Shawna Finnegan about cybersecurity, ICTs for human security and conflict prevention, and the challenges faced by civil society.
Earlier in October, APCNews crossed paths with three participants at the Africa Internet Governance Forum. Grace Githaiga of Kenya, Towela Nyirenda Jere of South Africa and Lillian Nalwoga of Uganda kindly agreed to provide perspectives on internet governance in Africa.
In May 2012, APC supported participation in the 13th session of the UPR by members and networks from Ecuador, India, Brazil, South Africa and the Philippines, following stakeholder report submissions made in late 2011. Several governments expressed interest in internet-related issues, including the right to information, freedom of expression, and cybersecurity.
