Women’sNet, an APC member in South Africa, is hosting a regional workshop to be held in Johannesburg in February which will bring together women’s organisations, government officials, and gender and development practitioners and researchers, involved in gender and information and communication projects and initiatives.

The aims of the workshop are:

· To share stories and experiences of how organisations in different African contexts have combined various ways and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) platforms for empowering rural women

· To share experiences of how different ICTs have been used to facilitate rural and disadvantaged women’s participation in public debates on issues of governance and other factors that broadly impact on their quality of life

· To identify the how ICTs have been used to deal with real issues that rural women face like food security, conflict situations, drought, land, health, economic well-being, and so forth

· To share and discuss best practices on working collaboratively with rural women in advancing their own empowerment and development through ICTs

· To identify the challenges for making ICTs accessible to rural women

· To analyse and strategise as to the future directions and initiatives that would bring more rural women into the information society with increased opportunities for exchange and cooperation around their own empowerment

· To explore and strategise how participating organisations can strengthen their own information and communications work

The workshop will take place February 23-25 and is held with the support of the Food and Agricultural Organisation’s (FAO) Dimitra Project.
