Pakistan: Reclaiming freedom of expression to end impunity

Bytes for All, Pakistan organized a candlelight vigil in solidarity with the global IFEX End Impunity campaign, and the #TakeBackTheTech campaign.

Over 50 civil society members and passerbys gathered to express support to the torchbearers of freedom of expression in Pakistan such as journalists and human rights defenders, in the face of the growing culture of impunity.

Speaking at the vigil, Shahzad Ahmad of Bytes for All, Pakistan highlighted the issues of impunity against voices of freedom of expression and opinion in the country and explained how impunity was also a major cause for gender based violence.

Furthermore, prominent women’s rights activists, Arifa Mazhar of End Violence Against Women and Girls (EVAWG) Alliance, and Ambreen Ajaib of Insani Huqooq Ittehad (IHI), discussed the significance of the 16 days of activism, and how these are an important opportunity to resolve to do more for human rights all year round.
