On the first day of the Digital Citizen’s Indaba (DCI) in Grahamstown South Africa, Ethan Zukerman asked: “50 million people blog out of a global population of 6 billion people – not exactly representative is it?”
A good point. While blogs have experienced a huge growth, and 50 million is an impressive number, it still leaves many people in the dark. Literally in the dark – Ethan displayed a satellite picture of the world at night – while North America and Europe twinkle brightly, African has just a few glimmers. “No light, no blog” reads the caption below the picture.
Zukerman co-founded an initiative called “Global Voices” that attempts to redress some of the imbalance. Global Voices is a kind of blog reporter – collecting together blog content in one place, but focusing not on North America or Western Europe. Says Zukerman, "This is a project dedicated to the idea that there are people all over the world using the medium to express themselves. These voices are worthwhile listening too.”
So, Global Voices promotes blog content to a global audience with over 14,000 stories written by 110 authors. Each post features 1-10 other blogs, representing 150 nations, and many languages.
