Surveillance is one of the greatest challenges for civil society organisations trying to advance human rights on the internet, especially because of the lack of transparency and the difficulty in raising awareness among users. In South Korea, victims of communications surveillance have adopted an innovative approach to drawing attention to this issue, by launching a counterattack against state surveillance.
Korean Progressive Network Jinbonet, an APC member, has joined with human rights organisations, trade unions and other groups to create the Urgent Action Network against Cyber Surveillance. The network organised an event that brought together victims of communications surveillance, who jointly issued the Declaration of Independence from the Cyber Surveillance State.
Through partnership with Jinbonet, APC will continue working with human rights, workers rights and internet rights activists to confront communications surveillance by the government and fight for the protection of internet users’ privacy.
