APC and CIPESA invite you to a crucial session at the ninth edition of the annual Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica22), which will be held in Lusaka, Zambia, from 26-29 September 2022. FIFAfrica22 will feature several panels, workshops, exhibitions, and presentations across four days.

The virtual session, "Unpacking human rights and safety challenges and concerns in Ethiopia in the context of the 2022 global IGF", will provide an opportunity to learn about and discuss the human rights and media freedom situation in Ethiopia, and provide a platform for people who would like to participate in this year’s global Internet Governance Forum – to be held in Addis Ababa from 28 November to 2 December 2022 – to ask questions they might have about safety concerns in the context of the recent conflict in the northern parts of the country.

The session’s purpose is also to enable interaction between CSOs who plan to participate in the IGF with the IGF Secretariat and the Ethiopian IGF Committee. And we also aim to facilitate interaction between civil society, digital rights activists and members of the technical community in Africa and globally with those working in Ethiopia.

We will begin the session with a short historical overview of the last few decades in Ethiopia, how they have led us to the current situation and outline the human rights context in the country. Then we will have a summary of the responses to a short survey circulated prior to the event, followed by inputs from the Ethiopian IGF organising committee and the IGF Secretariat, including an update on preparations and a briefing on safety and security. The final agenda item will be reflections on previous IGFs that took place in countries with human rights challenges, followed by a discussion among session participants.
