A virtual dialogue on collective safety, co-convened by Just Associates (JASS), IM-Defensoras and APC, coincided with the launch of a new JASS tookit featuring resources for women human rights defenders. 

Technology has become a crucial part of the COVID-19 response, and this has raised some serious questions: Can privacy and public health security go hand in hand? Is it enough to use safeguards such as transparency and the use of intrusive technology only when absolutely necessary?

In response to the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) call for expressions of interest to join its Independent Advisory Committee (IAC), APC and other NGOs expressed their concerns about the IAC specifically, and the growing role of GIFCT more broadly in regulating content online.

Research ICT Africa and APC make this joint submission in the public interest to ensure that the internet, and access to it, can be a force for good in South Africa rather than becoming a tool which benefits some and leaves marginalised or vulnerable communities (including children) further behind. 

"Building Online Safety for Safe Houses" is a project implemented by One World Platform (OWP). OWP cooperated with four organisations responsible for safe houses that provide shelter for women and girls who have been abused.

eQualit.ie had a busy year, with continuing development of Deflect, its flagship distributed denial of service (DDoS) mitigation service, available free as always and now including multi-language localisation for greater global accessibility.

In 2017 Colnodo continued its efforts in building digital security skills through training aimed at journalists, activists, ICT centre facilitators and women. Hands-on workshops were organised and teaching materials were developed to promote safe online practices and raise awareness.
