APC, in collaboration with the Internet Policy Observatory, University of Pennsylvania, has commissioned a report that examines criminalisation of online expression in six Asian states. We welcome all to an informative discussion on the findings of the report, to be held in Kuala Lampur.

In this special edition of GISWatch, APC brings together analysis on the criminalisation of online expression from six Asian states: Cambodia, India, Malaysia, Myanmar, Pakistan and Thailand.

The Forum for Human Rights and Development, the Association for Progressive Communications, Bytes for All, Pakistan and Global Partners Digital are organising a regional consultation in Bangkok on the State of Freedoms of Assembly, Association, Expression and Religion on the Internet in Asia.

APC and the organisations supporting this joint statement welcome the report of the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Mr. David Kaye, to be presented at the 35th session of the Human Rights Council (HRC).

APC strongly condemns the murder of Yameen Rasheed, a prominent journalist, blogger, social media commentator and human rights defender in the Maldives. APC considers this killing as an outrageous and unconscionable attack on freedom of expression. 

This edition examines how gendered labour is embedded in the making of digital devices in the hardware industries spread across Asia, and how inequities of gender and other dynamics of caste, race, ethnicity continue to play a role in allegedly emancipated corporate spaces across the globe.

This study focuses on nine countries in Asia – Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam – which have recorded a significant number of violations of freedom of expression on account of religion or religious sensitivities.
