Personal data protection laws have proliferated across the Asia-Pacific but they are often misused to abuse citizens’ right to privacy. We must examine their autocratic bent in the context of a global framework like Europe’s GDPR which is also regularly abused.
The Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (AprIGF) is one of the key regional initiatives on internet governance. This year will be a hybrid event in Brisbane, Australia, from 28 to 31 August. APC staff and members are hosting and involved in key sessions.
Inspired by a participant question raised at the recent Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF), this digital justice researcher attempts an answer with five suggestions and poses an amended question for us all.

APC and its members played a key role at this year's Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) in Vladivostok, Russia, organising, moderating and speaking at a range of plenary sessions and workshops throughout the event.
Over recent years, APC has worked to increase the capacity of civil society actors, particularly from the global South, to contribute to and influence internet governance processes. This overview looks at the APC community’s contributions to more effective and inclusive governance in 2018.
I did not fly to Vanuatu for the 2018 Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum. But still, I participated in this year's APrIGF, albeit remotely.
The latest Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum took place 13-16 August in Vanuatu around the motto Empowering Communities in Asia Pacific to Build an Affordable, Inclusive, Open and Secure Internet. APC participated in the forum to advance internet governance development in the region.
