Prizes

The Association for Progressive Communications has established four prizes since 2000. There are two regional communication prizes, one gender and ICT award and one free software prize. Currently there are no plans to offer these prizes.

APC Betinho Communications Prize

The APC has been working with non-governmental organisations, activists, and social movements since 1990 to facilitate their work through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs). The APC Betinho Communications Prize was launched to mark APC’s tenth anniversary in 2000, and to recognise and document outstanding examples of how the internet can make a real difference for the world’s communities today.

The prize commemorates the inspirational life and work of Herbet de Souza (Betinho), a visionary Brazilian social activist.

Gender & ICT Awards

The APC WNSP and the Global Knowledge Partnership launched the Gender and ICT Awards to honor and bring international recognition to innovative and effective projects by women to use ICTs for the promotion of gender equality and/or women’s empowerment.

APC Hafkin Communications Prize

The Hafkin prize was established to honour Dr. Nancy J. Hafkin, a true pioneer of networking, and development information and communications in Africa, over the course of a twenty-three year career. Nancy was among the first to enter the field of electronic communications in Africa. She played a central role in facilitating the APC’s work to enable email connectivity in more than ten countries during the early 1990s, before full internet connectivity became a reality in most of Africa.

APC Chris Nicol FOSS Prize

The APC Chris Nicol FOSS Prize recognises initiatives that are making it easy for people to start using free and open source software (FOSS). The prize is awarded to a person or group doing extraordinary work to make FOSS accessible to ordinary computer users.

The APC FOSS Prize was established to honor Chris Nicol, a long time FOSS advocate and activist who for many years worked with APC.
