Job opportunity with APC: Tech support and online event specialist

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is looking for a tech support and online event specialist to join the technical team in APC’s virtual office. You will be joining a distributed team of techies who work in supporting the IT needs of a global organisation and its partners.

About the role: APC is supporting a large global NGO in the planning and implementation of global hybrid events (combining online and offline components).The APC tech team's role and responsibility will be to maintain the technical infrastructure and services that will be used by the staff and participants in these events. The purpose of the “tech support and online event specialist" role will be to coordinate daily activities related to this task.

About you: You are a techie who likes interacting with (and helping) users. You want to make a difference in the world. You are resourceful, patient, a good listener and teacher, and pay attention to detail. You are organised with your time and deliverables, and are a good coordinator – helping others to work similarly. You like innovating in online events and want to make them interactive and participatory experiences.

Your tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Managing day-to-day project activities that could include following up with APC staff, project staff and external contractors; organising project meetings; and following up on deliverables and updating project statuses.

  • Planning and developing online activities like sessions, games, meetings and seminars.

  • Developing, supporting and curating asynchronous spaces like wikis, debate forums and mailing lists.

  • Providing technical support during the events to speakers, participants, interpreters, note takers, etc.

  • Writing and updating technical documentation and other reports.

  • Organising and leading trainings for online event support staff.

Start date: October

Location: The applicant may work from anywhere in the world provided they have good internet access. For this position the candidate should ideally be located in European/African time zones. APC provides an equipment allowance and requires staff to use their own computers and office equipment. International and regional travel may be required occasionally and will be dependent on current COVID-19 conditions. APC is a networked organisation with a strong base and orientation towards the global South and privileges this political lens and location in our work.

Remuneration and duration of contract: This is a full time (1.0 FTE) position on contract for an initial 12-month period with the possibility of renewal. Contract renewal is dependent on performance (there will be a four-month probation period) and availability of funding. Remuneration is in the range of USD 30,000 and USD 45,000 per year. Short-listed applicants will receive specific information about the salary range.

Reporting: The successful applicant will report to the web developer and technical operations support specialist and will work with the technical team and external partners.

Our ideal candidate:

  • Has a general technical background education in computing with demonstrated experience (seven years minimum) in technical areas.

  • Has experience providing remote technical support to end users (on Windows, Linux and Mac platforms).

  • Has excellent English language skills and is capable of writing and editing content.

  • Is comfortable using spreadsheets, project management tools, and open source software in general.

  • Is well organised and capable of managing self and others.

  • Has experience organising online events.

Additionally, it would be a plus if you:

  • Have system administrator, web developer and/or programmer experience.

  • Have worked with people and implemented activities remotely and in a global online virtual environment.

  • Have experience as a trainer or teacher, and/or designing or running online trainings.

  • Are willing and able to work odd hours (with Asian and Caribbean time zone teams).

  • Are fluent in other languages.

  • Have experience in and commitment to free/libre and open source software (FLOSS).
