Job opportunity with APC: Senior finance administrator

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is looking for an experienced senior finance administrator to join the APC finance team in APC’s virtual office. You will be joining a small, friendly and supportive finance and administration team.

APC is a non-profit organisation with an annual budget of around USD 5 million sourced from a range of donors, including governments, private and public foundations, and intergovernmental organisations. APC has a staff of 45 and implements a complex set of programmes and projects with detailed financial compliance, monitoring and reporting requirements.

As part of our institutional strengthening, we will be reviewing and improving the systems, policies and procedures that underpin our financial work. The successful applicant will have an opportunity to contribute to that development process and the growth and configuration of the finance team.

Purpose of position: Reporting to APC’s finance manager, the senior finance administrator will be primarily responsible for managing the day-to-day accounting and financial activities of the organisation as well as regular reporting requirements and payroll.

Tasks and responsibilities include:

  • Completion of accounting and bookkeeping functions on a regular basis.

  • Production of management financial reports on a regular basis.

  • Reviewing current financial report templates and making recommendations for improvements.

  • Implementation of monthly staff payroll and reconciliation on a quarterly basis.

  • Timely payments to creditors and staff.

  • Assistance with reconciliation of financial records related to subgrants, activities and events, including control of payment requests by checking and verifying supporting documentation.

  • Participating in institutional strengthening work around financial systems, policies and procedures and supporting the finance manager in adoption and implementation of them by the APC team.

Location: The applicant may work from anywhere in the world provided they have internet access. APC provides an equipment allowance and requires staff to use their own computers and office equipment. International and regional travel may be required occasionally and will be dependent on current COVID-19 conditions. APC is a networked organisation with a strong base and orientation towards the global South and privileges this political lens and location in our work.

Remuneration and duration of contract: This is a full-time (1 FTE) position on contract for an initial 12-month period with the possibility of renewal. Contract renewal is dependent on performance (there will be a four-month probation period) and availability of funding. Remuneration is in the range of USD 49,000 and USD 56,000 per year. Short-listed applicants will receive specific information about the salary range.

Reporting: The successful applicant will report to APC's finance manager, will work with the finance team, and will support other staff in finance-related activities.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • A degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in business, management or finance.

  • Demonstrated experience (seven years minimum) in financial management and accounting, ideally in the non-profit sector.

  • Experience with audits, compliance, budgets and resource development.

  • Knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Experience with general ledger functions.

  • Experience working with project financials, and donor financial and administrative reporting requirements.

  • Hands-on experience with accounting software and bookkeeping to trial balance in Sage Evolution.

  • Ability to use spreadsheets and other applications to a high level, specifically VBA and Macros. [1].

  • Proficiency in workflow management systems.

  • Have worked with people and implemented activities remotely and in an online virtual environment.

  • Are a competent multitasker, able to lead and complete a wide range of tasks and activities quickly and accurately.

  • Are able to work well in a team, under pressure, and can independently meet tight and sometimes multiple deadlines.
