The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) is a global network of civil society organisations whose mission is to empower and support organisations, social movements and individuals in and through the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to build strategic communities and initiatives for the purpose of making meaningful contributions to equitable human development, social justice, participatory political processes and environmental sustainability.

APC is happy to invite applications for a six-month part time position as campaigns coordinator for its groundbreaking Take Back the Tech! Campaign. The successful candidate will be responsible for development and delivery of the 2013 campaign. This includes coordination of a geographically diverse campaign team, implementation of an effective communications strategy, supporting and broadening the TBTT campaigner network, building partnerships, and monitoring reach and impact.

Work period: October 2013 – February 2014.

About Take Back the Tech!

Take Back the Tech! accompanies the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence 25 November to 10 December, to raise awareness about tech-related violence against women, feminist practice and politics of technology, and secure online communications for women and girls. What began as a volunteer effort with pockets of campaigners in dozens of countries around the world in 2006 has evolved into an international multilingual online and community-level campaign with support from volunteers around the globe, APC members, and funded project partners in seven countries. Online resources include a mapping tool to document tech-related VAW in multiple languages, the TBTT website, Be Safe materials, digital stories and social networking spaces.

The Take Back the Tech! Campaign coordinator will report to the APC Women's Rights Programme (WRP) Manager.

Responsibilities:

1) Development and implementation of campaign strategy for 2013, including:

  • Specific campaign goal and objectives that support APC's overall work in addressing technology-related forms of violence against women.

  • Campaign actions and activities that promote the participation of existing and new campaigners from different parts of the world, including encouraging APC member involvement

  • Support for the development of local campaign actions by APC's End Violence: Women's Rights and Safety Online project campaign partners in 7 countries.

  • Campaign kit andcall to participation.

  • Communications and social media strategy to increase the potential impact, network and visibility of the campaign.

2) Management of the campaign online spaces and communications strategies, including:

  • Coordinating development of the campaign site to become a key global space for campaigning, resources, mapping and information related to technology-related form of violence against women.

  • Writing campaign actions and other relevant content for the website.

  • Coordinating creation of graphics and other related multi-media content for the website and campaign.

  • Coordinating translation of campaign actions and content into Spanish and French.

  • Coordinating web updates for all language versions of the site.

  • Managing campaign social media spaces and ensuring regular updates and interaction with campaigners and community.

  • Highlighting actions and content generated by campaigners in various campaign communication channels.

3) Coordinate the campaign team, including:

  • Facilitating discussion and input in all aspects of campaign planning and implementation in campaign team.

  • Facilitating input by and participation of APC's Women's Rights Programme and APC Communications Programme into the development of campaign strategy and actions, where necessary.

  • Developing of workplan that includes clear roles, tasks and timelines for campaign team members.

  • Identifying new members for the team as seen as necessary, including growing a pool of volunteers to manage social media spaces, and contracting consultants as necessary.

  • Managing campaign budget and timely payment for contractors.

4) Support in sustaining and growing partnerships and the network of campaigners for the campaign, including:

  • Identifying and following up with opportunities and interest for collaboration and participation in the campaign.

  • Support in building relationships between APC Women's Rights Programme's new and existing partnerships in the campaign.

5) Supporting the evaluation of the campaign, including:

  • Coordinating documentation of campaign lessons and processes.

  • Monitoring reach and impact of the campaign, in qualitative and quantitative terms.

  • Facilitating communication and information exchange between campaigners and M & E team.

Qualifications:

  • Sound knowledge and understanding of gender, human rights, feminism and issues related to violence against women and the internet, including online safety issues.

  • Experience in strategic campaigning, including development of strategies, actions and community or network mobilising.

  • Demonstrated ability in creative and strategic communications for change, including excellent writing skills, content creation in written and other formats and appropriate use for intended audience.

  • Strong social media experience and skills for campaigning and mobilising collective action in creative and strategic ways, with a good understanding of the social media environment, opportunities, risks and how to leverage it effectively for activism and change.

  • Ability to locate and connect online and offline activism and mobilisation.

  • Experience in building alliances, networking and partnership through a collaborative approach.

  • Experience in coordinating high performing teams and ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability, good interpersonal skills and ability to work cross-culturally.

  • Comfort in taking initiative, collaborating and working remotely.

  • Fluent English required, Spanish and/or French would be an added advantage.

The successful candidate can work from anywhere in the world provided they have internet access. APC is a truly virtual organisation and does not have a physical headquarters. We do our work online.

Starting date: As soon as possible.

Salary: This is a six-month contract. Remuneration is based on APC's salary scale for the position for a project coordinator. Short-listed candidates will receive specific information on the salary range on request.
