This GISWatch special report by APC collates civil society perceptions of the changes that have taken place in the information and knowledge-sharing society over the last 10 years, capturing the shifts experienced by communications activists and stakeholders in a rich and nuanced way.
Derechos Digitales is an independent, non-profit and non-governmental organisation whose mission is to defend and promote human rights in the digital environment. Its main areas of work include freedom of expression, access to knowledge, transparency and democracy, and privacy and personal data protection.
Between 22 April and 3 May 2013, the UN Human Rights Council held the 16th session of its Universal Periodic Review. APC, together with its members and partners, developed submissions for the inclusion of internet-related human rights issues in the recommendations made for the reviews of Azerbaijan, Cameroon, Canada and Colombia.
From 14-16 May the World Telecommunication/ICT Policy Forum took place in Geneva. APC and other civil society representatives presented a closing statement calling on the International Telecommunication Union and all participating governments to ensure transparency, openness and inclusivity in their policy processes. The International Partnership Group on Azerbaijan, of which APC is a member organisation, urges the UN to hold Azerbaijan to account during its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) for its failure to protect basic human rights.
To publicly challenge increasing censorship, surveillance and internet filtering in Pakistan, APC member Bytes for All, and Media Legal Defense Imitative lodged a petition in the Lahore High Court in January 2013 claiming that the bans imposed on various websites were in blatant violation of civil and political rights.
Last week, APC attended the Fourth Ministerial Conference on the Information Society in Montevideo, Uruguay, organized by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean and attended a pre-event on Open Development: Exploring the future of the information society in LAC.
