The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) mobilises for the 9th annual Internet Governance Forum, taking place in Istanbul, Turkey from 31 August – 5 September 2014. Leading and participating in workshops, side events with partners, decision makers and stakeholders, and prompting dialogue around internet rights, public access and digital privacy, APC will play a key role in influencing internet governance around the world.

Pre-events

Best Bits network meeting
Meeting participants will move forward from NETmundial to share analysis and strategy on a range of key internet policy processes that civil society groups plan to influence over the coming year.

Beyond NETmundial: The roadmap for institutional improvements to the global internet governance ecosystem
Simultaneously a launch event for a book of the same name, discussion will focus on how to move forward after shifts in internet governance debates prompted by the april netmundial meeting in Brazil.

Collaborative leadership exchange on multistakeholder participation
Key topics such as future of the internet ecosystem, internet and human rights, access, critical internet resources, security and privacy will be discussed among stakeholders. The session will take the format of an unconference.

Sex, rights, and internet governance
This pre-event will bring together sexual rights activists, women’s human rights defenders and gender equality advocates at the IGF to discuss emerging issues in the intersections of sexuality rights and Internet rights.

Disco-tech Istanbul
APC, Tactical Tech and Web Foundation host a dynamic, peer-learning event on censorship and circumvention, problems and solutions for internet rights.

Focus sessions and roundtables

Gender Dynamic Coalition
The meeting launches the new “Feminist Principles of the Internet,” which is a working document produced by over 50 women’s and internet rights activists. Panelists and attendees will analyse topics including online violence against women, ‘harmful’ content, ‘hate speech’ and sexual expression.

Setting the scene:Topical insight and debate related to the subthemes of IGF 2014
The launch of the IGF is a panel that frames each of the sub-themes by highlighting related topical issues as well as providing participants with tasters for how these sub-themes will be addressed during the rest of the IGF.

Round table for organisers of workshops on enhancing digital trust and the internet and human rights
The objective of the human rights roundtable is to provide a wrap-up session in which to gather comprehensive feedback from the various main sessions and workshop organisers on human rights issues discussed by stakeholders, and to use those inputs to strive to formulate an input that could be brought to the upcoming HRC.

Evaluating multistakeholder mechanisms to address governance issues
This workshop will examine how governance/operational problems can be addressed in a manner that continues to safeguard the security and stability of the Internet. It will use a four-step process ICC-BASIS submitted to NETmundial.

Promoting platform responsibility for content management
This workshop aims to bring together a variety of stakeholders to discuss the problems associated with content removal in two distinct scenarios: copyright infringement and offensive (including indecent and defamatory) content.

Launch: 2014 Global Information Society Watch
Global Information Society Watch (GISWatch) aims for an open, inclusive and sustainable information society and has produced reports yearly since 2007. This year’s edition of GISWatch is entitled “Communications surveillance in the digital age” and contains analysis from civil society representatives in more than 55 countries.

Launch of an African declaration on internet rights and freedoms
Building on the Windhoek Declaration, the African Broadcasting Charter, the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression and, most recently, the African Platform on Access to Information, the Declaration is an initiative which aims to define and strengthen standards for the Internet in Africa.
