data protection

Data protection can have different meanings depending on context, but a general definition is the legal protection of personal or commercial data. The APC Internet Rights Charter states that public or private organisations requiring personal information from individuals must collect only the minimal data necessary and for the minimal period of time needed. Data should only be processed for the stated purposes and must be deleted when no longer needed. Finally, collection, use, disclosure and retention of data must comply with a transparent privacy policy which allows people to find out what is collected about them and to correct inaccurate information.
