Recent events in the Middle East have shown us that a new era in news making has arrived. The internet has shaped how news is disseminated, how it is received, and how it is digested. If you are working to create digital and mobile open-source technology and tools to be used by journalists, then you may be eligible to receive some of the 2.7 million dollars in grant money being awarded by the International Press Institute (IPI) and Google in the IPI News Innovation Contest. The contest aims to encourage innovative and breakthrough ideas that have the potential to create lasting impact in Africa, the Middle East and Europe.

The IPI is a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists dedicated to securing and promoting freedom of the press freedom, the free flow of news and information, and expanding journalism practices.

“In this time of global change and conflict, free flows of information have never been more important”, said Alison McKenzie, Acting Director of the IPI. “A free press empowers people, and a thriving, independent, innovative news industry is vital to any country’s development. We are proud to play our part in fostering innovation to ensure that the news continues to hold up a mirror to the societies it is meant to serve”.

Deadline for applications is June 01, 2011.
