internet rights

Internet rights is a movement that seeks to apply the framework of fundamental human rights in the current context of information societies. In a world where all aspects of life including economic, culture, social and political life, are increasingly mediated by technology, access to information technology for communication is critical to enable the realisation of a broad range of fundamental human rights. The right to communicate encompasses many other areas, such as freedom of opinion and expression, freedom of peaceful assembly and association, privacy, the right to development and women's rights. Due to the specificity of women's experiences and realities as recognised under CEDAW, internet rights includes their right to freedom from discrimination and exclusion and the affirmation of the right to political, economic, cultural and social participation in the internet arena. APC and others have drawn together the various themes to produce a Charter for Internet Rights.
