APCNews - July 8 2008 - Year IX Issue 82

In this edition, you will be happy to learn that our Take Back the Tech campaign earned itself a honorary mention from an Austrian organisation working in the field of electronic arts. This is well deserved by APC’s women’s programme, which has been the initiator of this original communication campaign against violence against women. We revisit the Internet Governance Forum on internet access and take a look at an example of community wireless internet access in a school in Zimbabwe. We conclude with news of a partnership between APC and 80/20 Thinking, a move that will bolster APC’s long-standing fight for internet rights.

Whilst recognising that the IGF is currently viewed and operates primarily as a space for discussion, the paper finds that (specifically in the case of Access) it is also a space in which commonality of opinion occurs to the level at which ‘recommendations’ can be made and repeatedly asserted independently/individually in the workshops. HARARE (Muroro Dziruni for Connect Africa) – The wireless school connectivity project is an initiative that has connected a secondary school in a poor township of Harare to the internet, using wireless technologies.
