Congratulations APC!
I first heard of APC from Barry Roberts at the University of Peace in Costa Rica in about 1987 – after that I met Geoff Sears in San Francisco at IGC and decided to start an Australian node. WE got up and running in 1989 with a lot of help from Mike Jensen (who met his future wife Georgia while he was working on the Pegasus launch)
My first APC meeting as such was in Epe Holland in 1989, where I remember getting lost on a bike ride with Carlos Afonso. At that meeting many of us were discussing the future formalising of the organisation – I recall Mitra, Geoff Sears, Carlos Afonso, Viv Kendon, Kirk Roberts and others being present.
I remember the passionate discussions before signing the original APC agreement in 1990 – over such phrases as borderless worlds, the nature of democracy -Howard Fredericks was originally chairing the meeting, but I think in turn just about every participant chaired parts of the session only to fail to gain the confidence of the gathering! Those words did not come together easily and those where we could not agree initially showed the passion which drove the launch of APC.
I’m glad APC maintains that passion still! It’s great to see that APC continues to do great work in the Internet space, as it has from its origins. Well done to Anriette and the team!
