Status of Community Radio in Bangladesh by AHM Bazlur Rahman S21BR

Introduction
The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) is aware of its responsibility to administer the allocation of radio frequency, so that it equitably distributed and targeted towards the wellbeing of people, particularly the poor and marginalized.

Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) is in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations. BNNRC promoting the advocacy with the government in relations to community radio with other organizations since its emergence.

Our constitution envisions a state mechanism that guarantees equitable distribution of wealth among its citizens and of opportunities, which will eventually guide to the path of sustainable economic development.

A three days long training workshop titled, ‘Training of Facilitators: Community Radio Installation, Broadcast and Operation’ has inaugurated today in IDB Bhaban, Dhaka.

The event has organized by Community Radio Academy and Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) (19-21 June 2010) with the support of Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

Asia Pacific Region of the World Association of Community Radio Broadcasters, AMARC-Asia Pacific has welcomed the recent decision of the Government of Bangladesh to approve 12 community radio licenses. This is the first time in the history of Bangladesh that community radio licenses have been approved.
