These are highlights of APC’s contribution to implementation of WSIS goals. It provides an overview of our work during the last five years.

Contribution to the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development five year review of progress on WSIS outcomes

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) was a major UN conference on information and communication technologies (ICTs) that took place in Geneva in 2003 and Tunis in 2005. This is APC’s contribution to an invitation from UN CSTD to the different stakeholders to submit inputs concerning the implementation and follow-up of WSIS outcomes. Our response includes a reflection on the process and issues.

WSIS follow up: APC at the Commission on Science and Technology for Development

“The post WSIS clock is ticking and many challenges remain,” said APC executive director Anriette Esterhuysen at the opening of the twelfth session of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSDT). Among these challenges, she talked about WSIS principles related to human rights: “In many countries from the developed world and the developing world there is still a sense that freedom of information is perceived more as a threat than as an enabler, as a driver for learning and innovation and for more transparent and accountable governance.” CSDT is reviewing progress made in the implementation of and follow-up to the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) outcomes at the regional and international levels.

Looking Back, Moving Forward: Gender Networking and Advocacy on the Information Society

WSIS Follow up: APC contribution to the session on Development-oriented policies for an inclusive information society

The Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) is one of the UN bodies that took up the follow up of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). This is APC’s contribution to a CSTD meeting meeting dealing with development-oriented policies for a social-economic inclusive information society, including access, infrastructure and an enabling environment, that took place on May 2007 in Geneva, as part of a series of WSIS follow-up meetings.
