Güneş Tavmen is the author of the Global Information Society Watch Special Report on Turkey, launched at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Istanbul, Turkey in September 2014. APC’s Elvira Truglia spoke to Tavmen during the IGF about the state of communications regulation in Turkey and what can be done to reverse the tide of restrictive policies.

Women's rights at the 2014 IGF

Over the years, APC’s Women’s Rights Programme (WRP) has actively participated at the Internet Governance Forum in order to raise questions, issues and linkages between feminism and the internet. The participation of gender advocates in this space has grown every year and this year’s WRP delegation included 23 feminist and queer activists from diverse countries, in addition to many feminist allies from across the four sectors of internet governance. Internet censorship, surveillance in Turkey tightens days after IGF concludes in Istanbul

The Association for Progressive Communications (APC) strongly condemns the Turkish government for amending a law that tightens internet censorship. The law, which now grants the Telecommunications Directorate (TIB) extensive powers to block access to websites without a court order, comes on the heels of the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in Istanbul on 2-5 September 2014.

Since 2006, APC has been a key player in creating a space for civil society in internet policy making. The ninth Internet Governance Forum kicks off on 2 September in Istanbul, Turkey. For four days, people around the globe will discuss everything related to how the internet runs– from who makes decisions, what works, what doesn’t, and how things can be better. APC's priorities for the ninth Internet Governance Forum,Turkey, 2014

The ninth annual IGF will be held in Istanbul, Turkey on 2–5 September 2014. This year’s overall theme is “Connecting Continents for Enhanced Multistakeholder Internet Governance”. Major developments in global internet governance have taken place since the 2013 IGF in Bali. In spite of a busy year, some of the most difficult issues have not been resolved. APC expects that IGF 2014 will be a place for discussion on these developments, and that this IGF will be more outcome oriented than any previous IGF. Impacting global advocacy on tech-related violence against women through regional IGFs

Partners of the “End Violence: Women’s rights and safety online” project have participated in three regional internet governance forums (Africa IGF, Asia Pacific IGF, LAC IGF). APC interviewed our members who attended and the impact their participation had on tech-related violence against women.
