Communications: Monitoring and evaluation
The APC communications team provides regular M&E of the following:
1. Content readership on APC.org (twice monthly)
2. Presence of APC and our work in the media and related networks (ongoing)
3. Web statistics for APC.org and GISWatch.org (as required)
4. APCNews, press, Twitter and Facebook subscription numbers (every two months)
Content readership on APC.org
We track the articles which appear in the “Most read articles” box on the homepages of APC.org in English, Spanish and French. The articles which appear in this box are news, publications and press release items for the first eight weeks after they are added to the website. Before September 2011 we only tracked news articles.
We are tracking if we are increasing readership (growth in number of reads; gap between 1st and 5th most read in each language closing) and also to monitor topics that generate greatest interest from readers.
How do we do this? Twice every month, the communications manager manually copies content from the homepage boxes when the top content is approximately 60 days old and pastes the top reads – headlines gdoc. On a periodic basis the figures are added to a top reads – statistics gdoc for analysis and production of graphics.
Presence of APC and our work in the media and related networks (ongoing)
Our tracking involves collecting and analysing content which appear in the media or networks which mention APC, our project or highlight our work.
How do we do this?
We find the articles using Google alerts in English, Spanish, and French and by manual collection (eg when staff, members or project partners send us clippings or URLs). We are reliant on the later in the case of other languages.
The media focal point in the comms team together with an intern keep records up to date. Great examples are also added to APC in the media.
Web statistics for APC.org and GISWatch.org (as required)
Web statistics are archived yearly and also on an as needed basis by requesting from Adolfo.

Other M&E has included:
APC’s 2012 annual report was a retrospective for the period 2009-12 to reflect and report on our achievements and challenges. Mallory Knodel worked with Chat Ramillo to conduct an end of term evaluation. Staff completed a survey and some were interviewed. From there, recommendations were made to improve the reporting cycle in 2014 and going forward.
Annual report 2008/Progress report 2004-8/End of term evaluation
APC’s 2008 annual report was a retrospective for the period 2004-8 to reflect and report on our achievements and challenges as we embarked on a new action plan in a complex financial period. Karen Higgs worked with Debbie Budlender, the APC evaluator to conduct an end of term evaluation using The Most Significant Change2 methodology. Members and staff completed the ETA and the content provided the orientation and material for the progress report 2004-8.
September 4 2007, revised January 25 2008
In March 2007 we surveyed our readers because we wanted to monitor how readers are using our newsletter especially regarding our original content, we were about to launch a new website, and we wanted to review our newsletter format and distribution. Survey text in English and Spanish.
