Girls'Net

The Girls’Net website creates a space for and by girls where they can get information on relevant topics, air their views on social issues, interact with other girls and express themselves creatively. It is a place where they can exchange thoughts and ideas on just about anything! Content on this site is written, edited and/or sourced by Girls’Net club members, with the occasional assistance from club mentors and the Project Coordinator.

However, Girls’Net is much more than the website. Our activities also include: – Girls Training camps – Provincial Girls’Net tech-clubs – Girls’Net newsletter-Gist – Audio/radio programme

Girls’Net approach:
• Building girls’ awareness around gender issues
• Developing their technical skills, specifi cally their ability to use ICTs
• Increasing their media literacy
• Building a culture of social activism and community participation

We are currently working towards revising the Girls’Net website and also migrating it to a Drupal platform. This will also include training for girls on how to update the website remotely (which is a core feature of the programme). An important aim of the Girls’Net project is to enable girls to develop content that addresses the dearth of information available on the internet and in other media that is framed in the perspective of girls and women. Rather than girls being studied, spoken and written about, Girls’Net members have the opportunity to articulate their needs and interests in their own words.

The programme has established girls’ technology clubs in four provinces in South Africa. Plans are underway to establish clubs in the remaining five provinces as well as to establish a Campus Club with girls who are now enrolled at tertiary institutions.
