Sixth Internet Governance Forum
The Internet Governance Forum is a multi-stakeholder policy dialogue space convened by the UN to “foster the sustainability, robustness, security, stability and development of the internet”. It acts as a pressure valve for some of the most controversial internet governance issues. APC will be publishing our final assessment of this year’s IGF held in September in Kenya in the next newsletter but here are some of statements during and after the meeting.

APC on the new threats to human rights online
WELLINGTON 30 September 2011 (Joy Liddicoat for APCNews) — APC’s human rights expert Joy Liddicoat outlines the state of human rights online and the major challenges facing activists and human rights defenders. As levels of censorship and surveillance are increasing worldwide including in democratic countries threaten the lives of democracy activists, APC calls for the theme of the 2012 IGF to focus exclusively on human rights.
Hot issues on gender and the Internet Governance Forum: Newsletter out on Oct 12
RIO DE JANEIRO (GenderIT.org for APCNews) – Gender Centred –the bulletin on topical gender and ICT policy themes— comes to you this month from Nairobi. The The newsletter will include news on the Gender Report Card initiative proposed by the APC which allowed participants to gather long-awaited information about gender representation at the forum.
Civil society involvement in ICANN: Strengthening future civil society influence in ICANN policy-making
SAN FRANCISCO (Robin Gross for APC) – The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) was established in 1998 by the USA to run the root-servers that control the internet among other things. This new paper investigates ICANN’s processes, the role of civil society within decision-making, and highlights lessons learned from this multi-stakeholderism experiment as well as recommendations for future similar initiatives.
Multi-stakeholder participation in internet governance: An analysis from a developing country, civil society perspective
RIO DE JANEIRO (Marília Maciel and Carlos Affonso for APC) – A new analysis of multi-stakeholder participation in internet governance processes, including international experiences like the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and the UN Commission on Science and Technology for Development (CSTD) as well as the national level process in Brazil.
