JOHANNESBURG
(APC for APC) - APC has issued a statement
to express
our deep concern about recent attempts by governments and businesses
to close down the whistle-blower website WikiLeaks. We call on all
governments and the internet community to explicitly reject any form
of online content control that limits freedom of expression and
information, particularly information that contributes to making
governments more transparent, and that empowers citizens to
hold their governments accountable.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH
AFRICA, DECEMBER 9 2010 (APC) – The WikiLeaks Cablegate
affair is making it clear to governments that they cannot so easily
control what is secret and what is not, said Anriette Esterhuysen,
APC executive director. “We citizens need both carrot and stick
approaches in demanding and enforcing accountability and transparency
from our governments. WikiLeaks is a useful stick,” said
Esterhuysen.More

MONTEVIDEO (APC for APC) - Business people,
community
activists and policy-makers have an interest in as many people as
possible – including people in the lowest income-brackets- having
access to the internet, being able to check out important information
on websites and communicate cheaply via email or internet phone. APC
has produced a pro-poor ICT access resource kit in English, French and
Spanish for realising a universal access agenda -- including models,
experiences, lessons and opportunities-- in developing countries.More

JOHANNESBURG (Andrew Rens for APCNews) - The
South

advocates led by the National Council for the Blind have seen some
important gains in their engagement with the Department of Trade and
Industry. In support APC has commissioned a paper on model A2K
legislation. The paper looks at the South African case but is a useful
document for anyone anywhere in the world who wants to strengthen
