Earlier this year, the Council of Europe released a report on the application of human rights to ICANN. The Non-commercial stakeholder group (NCSG) and endorsing organisations, of which APC is one, have submitted comments on that report to raise concerns about the role of governments, ICANN’s legal status and the regulation of hate speech. The final stage of the 10-year review of the World Summit on the Information Society, kicked off today June 9 in Geneva. United Nations resolutions are formal texts adopted by a UN body, such as the UN General Assembly, the Security Council, or the Human Rights Council. These resolutions are not legally binding, but can focus world attention on important issues, build international cooperation and sometimes lead to legally binding treaties and conventions.
In partnership with members and networks, APC’s Internet Rights programme advocates for the protection, promotion and respect of human rights at the national level through the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a unique mechanism of the Human Rights Council involving a review of the human rights records of all UN member states.
