GreeningIT - About the project
As a network, APC has committed to making technology work to sustain the environment. This means that it is undertaking research in order to better understand the new challenges we face related to electronic waste, climate change and other rising issues, what policy gaps exist, and how ICTs can be used more sustainably by practitioners, civil society and service providers..
APC members have been implementing projects that range from monitoring environmental degradation, to natural disaster and accident reporting, and using ICTs to manage energy resources more efficiently. APC members are also conducting research on using ICTs for climate change adaptation, low-power computing, alternative energy sources and e-waste management in developing countries.
The GreeningIT initiative that aims to address two critical challenges:
- How do national ICT policy environments address ICTs, environmental sustainability and climate change?
- How can ICTs be used more sustainably by ICTD practitioners, civil society organisations and service providers?
Along with its action research network, APC is developing practical guidelines and information resources such as the “GreeningIT directory”:http://www.apc.org/en/resources, which collects hundreds of ICT and environmental resources from around the world and can be used for campaigning and policy advocacy by the APC network and all advocates committed to environmental sustainability.
Through these activities, APC is building a research network that can play an ongoing role in conducting policy and action research in the field of ICTs and environmental sustainability.
