A government is the organisation that is the governing authority of a political unit, the ruling power in a political society, and the apparatus through which a governing body functions and exercises authority.
Style information: Clearly distinguish between “state” and “government” as these terms are often used interchangeably, but do not mean the same thing (see also the entry for “state” in this glossary). As a general rule, “government” should not be capitalised.
