human rights and ICTs
- Definition
- The information society has the potential to either advance human rights around the world or threaten them. APC believes that the ability to share information and communicate freely using the internet is vital to the realisation of human rights as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. APC has developed the Internet Rights Charter setting out the rights which must be recognised, protected and respected for the internet to be a tool which empowers the people of the world. The relationship between human rights and ICTs includes issues such as freedom of expression, access to information, privacy, discrimination, gender equality, intellectual property, political participation, and freedom of assembly as well as capacity-building and training for human rights activists in how best to use ICTs in their work.
