audio streaming

audio streaming

Audio streaming is a method of playing audio files from the web. The audio is played as it arrives off the internet. The file is not preserved on the computer (avoiding time-consuming downloads of large files), so a network connection must be sustained to play the audio file. Several different, and often incompatible, formats are available for audio streaming, both proprietary and non-proprietary (free and open source software).

Style information: Note the possibility of using the verb “to stream”. Along with audio, video can also be streamed.
