Internet powerhouse, Korea? Shame on its internet policies!
The OECD ministerial meeting on “the Future of the Internet Economy” is being held in Seoul, Korea from June 17th to 18th. The Korean government seems to use this meeting as an opportunity to show off its advances of the Internet technology. However, no one would call a nation a ‘leading country of the Internet’ solely on its strong information technology base and IT industries. We hope this meeting would be a chance for the Korean government to recognize and feel embarrassed for its information and communication policies, including Internet policies, which violate many human-rights and is lagging behind. The Rapid Response Network (RRN)
The Rapid Response Network (RRN) is an initiative that is aimed towards ensuring that rights of expression, communication, association and protest on the Internet are protected. More specifically, to enable people and organisations to use information and communications technologies for social justice and equality. APC has long been concerned with trends that show that such rights are being violated. As one response, some APC members and partners, have decided to act as a “Rapid Response Network” (RRN). Members of this network have the ability to rapidly mirror a threatened website throughout the world, and raise awareness about the issues involved.

Here is an interesting post from Jose Murilo Junior on the Global Voices website, written prior to the start of this year's IGF, that previews the issues of internet governance and global privacy: "The global debate on Internet governance will once again gather people from all over the world at UN's IGF, this time in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The process was started last year in Athens, when more than 1,200 participants focused on discussion of the overarching issues tied to the future of information and communications technologies, including control over the Internet architecture and numbering and naming system, security, intellectual property, openness, connectivity, cost and multilingualism."
Rio forum to shine torch on the dark side of the Internet
In one of the first articles published about the Internet Governance Forum starting on November 12 2007, the AFP news agency says that "The darker corners of the Internet are to be
exposed under the bright light of Brazil's sun next week when a UN
conference on how the web is run gets underway. Rio de Janeiro
will from Monday host the UN Internet Governance Forum, in which 2,000
participants from 100 countries will examine ways to tackle pedophilia
and cybercrime. It will also discuss the implications of more
than 80 percent of the world's population not having access to the

Crackdown on internet users in Bangladesh
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members assisted by Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) officials are conducting house-to-house searches in Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet pinpointing each and every internet user with a fast connection. They are collecting user details from all the internet service providers (ISPs) in order to profile more than 450,000 internet subscribers in the country.
