Presentation:
The International Congress on “Media literacy and digital cultures”, which is being held on occasion of the Spanish Presidency of the European Union and within the framework of ATEI, aims to provide an arena for the debate, reflection and analysis of initiatives, projects, research and trends in relation to media literacy In Europe and Latin America.

The event will include the participation of professionals, researchers, theorists and teachers from the principal European and Latin American institutions and universities, who will be presenting their thoughts and perspectives regarding the state and scope of “media literacy”.

Background:

The development of digital and media literacy is an essential element for people’s integral training and for producing a critical and democratic population. UNESCO has traditionally spoken of “media education”, and later of “information literacy” and “digital literacy”, and considers these essential for cultural and educational development.

The European Commission, meanwhile, has promoted media literacy and has even, by means of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive, made it an obligation for its States in order to stimulate a critical approach to the media among the population and the appropriation of communication and information technologies. The UN’s Alliance of Civilizations has also promoted media literacy as a method for consolidating intercultural communication.

The ATEI, meanwhile, has by means of various actions and documents, assumed the population’s media literacy to be essential for the development of cultural and educational television. In this context, the “Media literacy and digital cultures” Congress seeks to offer an arena for the exposure and presentation of ideas, research and experiences to consolidate cooperation with regard to this subject between media, universities, researchers and teachers.
