The Economist: police lack legal tools to combat cyberstalking

The US-based magazine, The Economist, published an article today called Creepy Crawlies: The internet allows the malicious to menace their victims that paints a dire picture for victims of cyberstalking seeking justice.

The article tells the story of Leandra Ramm, an American mezzo-soprano, who is being cyberstalked by a man in Singapore. US police say they can’t do anything about her case because the perpetrator lives abroad.

“As with many internet crimes, the law is struggling to keep up. As Ms Ramm’s case demonstrates, many stalkers threaten their victims from abroad, often from countries without stalking laws. American-based internet service providers (ISPs) and firms such as Google, Yahoo! and Facebook, require court orders for information about stalkers to be served in the country of their headquarters. That can be costly and time-consuming.”
